Non-Destructive Testing exists to answer one question: is this asset sound, without taking it apart to find out? For industries running critical infrastructure — pipelines, pressure vessels, structural steel, storage tanks — that question sits behind every planned inspection and every unplanned failure investigation I’ve worked on.
Why “non-destructive” matters
The clue is in the name, but it’s worth spelling out what it means in practice. A weld can be tested for subsurface flaws without being cut open. A pipe wall can be measured for thinning without being taken out of service. A structure can be checked for cracking without being dismantled. The asset stays intact and, in most cases, stays in operation.
That’s the difference between NDT and destructive testing methods: NDT gives you the answer and lets you keep the asset.
The core techniques
Different defects need different methods, which is why I don’t think of NDT as a single technique but as a toolkit:
• Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) — detects surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials, commonly used on welds
• Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI) — reveals surface-breaking defects on non-porous materials, useful where MPI isn’t applicable
• Ultrasonic Testing (UT) — measures wall thickness and detects internal flaws using sound wave reflection, essential for corrosion monitoring
• Eddy Current Testing — identifies surface and subsurface defects in conductive materials using electromagnetic induction
• Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) and Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) — advanced ultrasonic methods giving more detailed defect characterisation than conventional UT
• Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) — detects surface-breaking cracks, including through coatings, without needing bare metal
Applying the right technique — or combination of techniques — depends on the material, the defect type you’re looking for, and the access available.
Why access and inspection need to work together
In my experience, NDT is only as good as the access that gets you to the point of measurement. A technically excellent inspection technique delivered from an awkward, unstable, or rushed access position produces worse data than a simpler technique delivered properly.
