Sutro Group Opens Innovation and Development Centre in Newport
Advanced Training Facility for NDT, Confined Space Drone and Inspection Technology
Sutro Group has opened an Innovation and Development Centre in Newport to support continued business expansion and advanced inspection training capabilities.
New Facility Location
The new facility is located at:
Unit D3, Langland Park West
Langland Way
Newport
NP19 4ED
The modern industrial unit is situated in Newport’s commercial district on Langland Park West, just off the A48.
Directions:
- From Cardiff: Exit M4 at junction 28, head towards City Bridge. The facility is just beyond the bridge.
- From the east: Exit M4 at junction 24, turn off A48 just before City Bridge.
Purpose of the Innovation Centre
The larger premises provide dedicated space for advanced applications training before deploying inspection services to clients. This investment in training infrastructure ensures Sutro Group’s inspection teams maintain the highest technical competence across multiple inspection disciplines.
Training Capabilities
NDT Inspection Techniques:
The facility enables advanced non-destructive testing training, including Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) for ultrasonic technicians.
PAUT offers several advantages over conventional ultrasonic testing:
- Faster inspection speeds
- Simplified inspection procedures
- Improved flaw detection capability
- More reliable results
- Increased safety for inspection personnel
The improved speed, accuracy, and efficiency of PAUT inspections deliver cost-effective solutions for clients whilst maintaining comprehensive asset integrity assessment.
Elios 2 Confined Space Drone Training:
The Innovation Centre provides hands-on training for drone inspection engineers operating the Elios 2 confined space drone platform. This training equips inspection teams with the practical experience needed to plan and execute inspections in complex indoor environments.
Benefits of Confined Space Drone Technology
Confined space drones eliminate the need for rope access or scaffolding in many inspection scenarios. This technology enables visual inspections in the most confined spaces whilst keeping inspection engineers safe from dangerous environments.
Collision-Tolerant Design: Unlike traditional drones, confined space platforms like the Elios 2 are designed to withstand contact with obstacles. The drone uses obstacles within the environment to navigate, preventing collision damage.
Versatile Inspection Capability: Confined space drones can inspect virtually any space regardless of size, shape, or structural material. Equipped with thermal cameras and lighting systems, these platforms make visual inspection possible in the most challenging locations.
Typical Applications:
- Mineshafts and tunnels
- Ship hulls and ballast tanks
- Industrial boilers
- Silos and storage vessels
- Tanks and pressure vessels
- Confined manufacturing spaces
Technical Skill Development
Operating confined space drones in complex indoor environments requires considerable skill to manoeuvre the platform safely and capture high-quality inspection data. The dedicated training facility enables Sutro Group’s inspection engineers to develop and refine these skills in controlled conditions before deployment on client sites.
Client Benefits
The Innovation and Development Centre investment delivers tangible benefits for Sutro Group’s clients:
Improved Safety: Advanced training ensures inspection teams operate equipment safely and effectively, reducing risk during inspection operations.
Reduced Asset Downtime: Well-trained technicians plan and execute inspections more efficiently, minimising the time assets remain offline for inspection activities.
Reduced Planning Time: Experienced operators familiar with equipment capabilities can develop more accurate inspection plans and deployment strategies.
Faster Inspections: Proficiency developed through hands-on training translates to quicker on-site inspection execution.
More Accurate Results: Technical competence ensures inspection data is captured correctly and interpreted accurately.
Continued Expansion
The move to larger premises reflects Sutro Group’s expanding client base and commitment to maintaining technical excellence across rope access, NDT, UAV, and robotic inspection services.
The Innovation and Development Centre represents investment in the technical capabilities that enable Sutro Group to deliver comprehensive inspection solutions for water utilities, oil & gas, power generation, and industrial clients across the UK.
